Each year on the weekend after Shrove Tuesday, the city of Mulhouse brings together young and old to celebrate the end of winter in a jolly atmosphere. The party starts on Friday evening with the parade on Place de la Réunion and continues until Sunday evening. Throughout the weekend there are processions of decorated floats, accompanied by fifes and drums. People in fancy dress follow the procession in a festive and friendly atmosphere. At night, the carnival-goers gather for live music in the carnival's partner restaurants and bars.
Other events are also organised, such as a ball in a marquee, an international cavalcade and the election of the carnival king and queen. The decorations and floats are made by imaginative volunteers who vie to offer the most fun, joyful display each year.
