This indefatigable observer of the 20th century lived his life at a hundred miles an hour, in search of the exhilaration of life, the beauty of the world and, above all, the encounter with others. Born in Argentina, the son of Jewish immigrants, he would have liked to be an actor, but he was a journalist, reporter, war correspondent, aviator at the age of 18, Resistance fighter (with his nephew Maurice Druon, he wrote the "Chant des Partisans"), famous novelist, adventurer and, in 1962, Académicien ? He experienced all the horrors and upheavals of the last century, and traveled the world exploring little-known lands such as Afghanistan, Burma and the Horn of Africa to track down slave hunters.

Firstly, because our beautiful town of Sarlat is home to the house of de la Boétie, his dear and famous friend, but also because the château of Michel Eyquem, seigneur de Montaigne, lies on the border between the Bordeaux and Dordogne regions. He wrote his "Essais" (1580-1588) in his "Librairie", a tower set apart from his château, where he could retreat in fertile solitude and total freedom. A free-spirited man, always in search of the truth, banishing all dogmatism, profoundly humanist but with no illusions about human nature, rich in a life nourished by experience and responsibility (he was mayor of Bordeaux during the wars of religion and the plague)
