Sourdeval is a town in the English Channel in Normandy region, about fifteen kilometers south of Vire, bordering the Calvados department.
It was formally established on 1 January 2016 following the merger of Sourdeval (also referred Sourdeval-la-Barre), headquarters (2709 inhabitants) and Vengeons (453 inhabitants), so with almost 3200 inhabitants.
Extensive (over 50 square kilometers), the territory has a wooded landscape in the heart of a plain crossed by the course of the See of coastal river that flows into the sea at Mont-Saint-Michel.
Composed of small town and village Sourdeval Vengeons, besides many villages, the town was badly affected by the German against attack of August 1944.
Until after the troubles of the Hundred Years War, and Sourdeval Vengeons had enjoyed some prosperity, linked to agriculture and small industries (textiles, cutlery). Nowadays, besides handicrafts, trade, agricultural production, the town highlights its environment and its associative and cultural dynamism. With its heritage, Sourdeval thus constitutes a pleasant stopover for lovers of green tourism, staying close to major attractions such as Mont Saint-Michel, an hour drive.
Long famous as the founder of the company headquarters Guy Degrenne (cutlery, tableware), which employed up to 200 employees before transferring its activities in Vire and closing the local plant in 2002, the town of Sourdeval still has a wealth of interest.
In the small town, it is well to discover the Church of St. Martin (XIX) which houses a beautiful wooden statue of the sixteenth century representing the bishop to whom the building is dedicated.
Moreover, the church and the "fountain wash" Saint-Germain, many wells, cross paths and shrines dotted the old town and its surroundings.
On Vengeons, which was affected by the rural exodus (over 1800 inhabitants in the nineteenth), heritage is more varied.
thus be mentioned for civil fountain Saint-Germain (former laundry), the house called Ms. Halot, dating from the eighteenth century, which has indoor shutters (to better retain heat in winter) and whose cellar was used the Revolution to hide refractory priests who said Mass, a well in the top of the hill of the village, or even the old workers' houses dedicated to the textile industry.
In the surrounding countryside, one can also still see meadows or crops whose fences are made of granite blocks...
On the religious level, a detour is required by the parish church whose foundations date back to the thirteenth century. The building was remodeled several times but are still visible Gothic porch whose pavement is partly made of tombstones and baptismal font of the nineteenth century. Moreover, an important sculpture is preserved.
This is the case of a Madonna and Child in polychrome stone of the fifteenth century above the main altar, statues in wood of St. Blaise and St. Germain (XVIII) and a bas-relief in white stone evoking, again, the martyrdom of Saint-Blaise (XVII). The altarpieces dedicated to the Virgin (XV and XVIII), newer windows (XX) and numerous tombstones complete this "panorama".
