Coimères is a municipality in Gironde, in the Aquitaine region, 50 km south-east from Bordeaux and 8 km south of Langon.
The territory of nearly 13 km² is located on the borders of the vineyards of Sauternes and the Landes forest. It is slightly hilly, partly wooded and cultivated (meadows, vineyards).
Inhabited since antiquity and then located on the Roman road linking Langon to Bazas, the village which today has a little over 1000 inhabitants was the seat of prosperous lordships during the Middle Ages and the Ancien Régime.
Affected during the troubles of the Fronde, in the seventeenth century, when the Guyenne rose against the kingship, Coimères then remains rich of its forest exploitation, in the south, on the edge of the forests of the Landes, and its vineyards, while 'proving a commercial and artisanal pole. This is still the case today.
Its heritage and its green environment make it a pleasant stop near the major tourist sites and wineries of the region.
A walk in the village and its close surroundings allows you to discover a historical heritage of interest and, in doing so, to go back in time...
Thus, to the east of the village, the archaeological site of Moutasse contains the remains of a fortified mound surrounded by ditches already attested at the dawn of the Middle Ages. A legend reported that the English at the end of the Hundred Years' War had buried a treasure that long, the peasants of the region tried in vain to bring to light.
In the village, we will linger at the Notre-Dame church, whose foundations date back to the 12th century. In Romanesque style, it presents a rare example of a clover-shaped choir and its ornately symmetrical portal like its porch has been classified as early as 1907. The church was, however, very much rebuilt in the 19th century and a new campaign restoration was initiated in 2012.
To see again, the castle of Roque, also called Larroque, built by Stephen de la Roque under Henry IV. In the village, it is also nicknamed the Tower of Coimères. We notice its splendid staircase at the level of the central pavilion, and in a general way, its classical architecture, fruit of rehandling over the centuries (except the original tower). A wing was however destroyed during the fighting of the Fronde, in the seventeenth century. The property was bought in 1979 by the Ducourt vineyards which produce 60 hectares of Bordeaux appellation wine. Information on +33 5 57 34 54 00.
Finally, the house of the chapter which belonged to the bishopric of Bazas, the city-school of beautiful invoice to the facade adorned with three median spans, dating from the early twentieth century and finally several old wash houses bordering streams will still mark this pleasant ride.
