Near the Cesse valley, in the heart of Hérault, the village of Cesseras seduces with the richness of its historical heritage. It takes place in the Regional Natural Park of Haut-Languedoc, not far from Pépieux, Minerve and Siran.

Known since prehistoric times, the town of Cesseras only officially appears in history in the middle of the 9th century. Ravaged during the Hundred Years War, it was also affected in 1591 by the battle of Cesseras-Azillanet, a major episode in the wars of religion.

Today, Cesseras is especially appreciated by tourists, who are seduced by the charm of its landscapes and its exceptional architectural heritage.

Things to see and do

A very fine example of Romanesque art in the Minervois, the Saint-Germain chapel dates originally from the 11th century. Raised in the 12th century, it reveals an interior with a single vaulted barrel vault for the nave and cul-de-four for the apse. Listed as a Historic Monument, it served as a parish church for a village that no longer exists.

The church of Saint-Geniès-de-Rome, in southern Gothic style, is also worth a detour. Also listed as a Historic Monument, it has a single nave with apse with radiating sides. Rebuilt in the 15th century following the destruction of the wars of religion, it has a 16th century Renaissance portal protected by a cross-ribbed porch. The bell tower, crenellated tower, is the only vestige of the first Romanesque building. Accessible to the visit on information at the town hall, it contains a very beautiful treasure, with in particular the reliquary arm of Saint Salvy.

While strolling in the village and its surroundings, do not miss to admire the site of the old Saint-Salvy chapel with listed ruins or the old village. Old houses with mullioned windows, towers, curtain walls and ruins of the old castle dismantled during the Revolution are to be discovered.

During your hikes in the countryside, linger near the Aldène cave, listed as a Historic Monument.
