Ancient and rich Cistercian abbey, Notre-Dame d'Auberive was founded in 1135 on the banks of the Aube by Saint Bernard. The monastery, particularly prosperous in the 13th century, suffered the ravages of the Hundred Years War, the wars of religion in the 14th century, then the Thirty Years War (17th century), since it was located on the border between Champagne and Burgundy. The old buildings were rebuilt in the 18th century in the great movement of reconstruction of the abbeys initiated by the abbey of Saint-Denis near Paris. In the 19th century, it became a central house for women. Its most famous prisoner was Louise Michel, imprisoned for 20 months following the events of the Commune in Paris in 1871.
Today the abbey has become a cultural center with many summer activities: historical visits to the site, music concerts, contemporary art center.
