A must at parties and special occasions like weddings, birthdays and New Year's Eve, Champagne enjoys an international reputation.

The key Champagne-producing areas are Vallée de la Marne, Montagne de Reims, Côte des Blancs and Côte des Bar, and all benefit from AOC certification. Three grape varieties are allowed in the production of this famous sparkling wine: Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay.

The wineries of the greatest Champagne houses are located in Reims and Épernay, in the Marne.

The most famous Champagne brands are in the Marne department, but the village which has the largest area in the Champagne appellation is a commune located in the Aube. This is the village of Riceys, which is also the only village to own 3 AOC. Champagne, Coteaux Champenois and the famous Rosé wine of the Riceys (known since Louis XIV).
In Champagne there are three major families:

The large Maisons de Champagne, mainly located in Épernay and Reims, grouped within the UMC (Union of Houses of Champagne).
Cooperatives that include vine growers who want to share plant and machinery, systems and grape collection areas, juice, for pressing, assembling, storing wines, disgorging, stirring. Some cooperatives have brands of cooperatives, brands created from grapes and blends of wines from cooperative wine producers, or even from the purchase of grapes. Others allow their members to use collective facilities but to develop and sell their own cuvees. This produces champagnes of winegrowers.
The winemakers of Champagne; Among them we can distinguish: cooperative winemakers elaborating their own cuvées of champagnes and selling them to the property, they are harvesting manipulants; The independent winemakers who make them all from A to Z without any cooperation.
Winemakers who do not have vines or who want to increase their production volume beyond their production from their land must declare themselves as traders so that consumers can find their way. They must also market their Champagne wines under two different brands if they have on the one hand wines from their vines and on the other hand wines from the grapes bought and worked to develop cuvées resulting from this trade.
