Castle of Lamartinie

Monument in Ytrac

Lamartinie Castle is located in the commune of Ytrac, in the Cantal department, a few kilometers west of Aurillac.

This manor located to the east of the village is mentioned at the end of the 16th century, having probably served as a refuge for inhabitants of Aurillac wishing to escape the plague.

It had several owners, starting with the powerful Tournemire family, then the Ollier, the Legendre, and in 1652, it was acquired by the Boschâtel family.

Architecturally, the building, originally composed of a dwelling in the form of a square keep (the current "south" wing), was added at the end of the 16th century with a dwelling flanked by a turret polygonal staircase.

A "north" wing was added in the 17th century.

However, it was at the very end of the 19th century that the Bouygues family from Limousin carried out major work to give the castle an appearance more in line with the tastes of the time. She called on the architect Lemaigre-Dubreuil. He had a polygonal turret built against the central body on the “east” facade, as well as a flanking tower to the northeast. Another turret was also added on the other end of the building. This is crowned with corbels like the square keep. A wing connects these two elements and delimits an interior courtyard opposite another wing perpendicular to the main building. Inside, at the same time, a number of rooms were refurnished at the end of the 19th century and given a "troubadour" decor.

All these alterations give the building, built in materials from the region, an original and even heterogeneous appearance, but which revisits the medieval and Renaissance styles from original elements and then recomposed.

The property is listed in the Inventory, including for its woodwork, fireplaces and painted decorations in the hall, dining room and lounges…

If it is not open to the public, the elegant estate can be observed from the outside during a walk in the countryside surrounding this characterful village.
