Located south of Périgord Noir, in the Lot-et-Garonne department, the village of Sauveterre-la-Lémance is particularly bordering the Lot and the Dordogne. It takes place a few kilometers from Villefranche-du-Périgord, Mazeyrolles, and Lacapelle-Biron.
Located in the countryside, in the heart of a green and peaceful region, the village of Sauveterre-la-Lémance seduces as much by its natural setting as by its architectural and historical heritage. Home of the French aviator Jean Mermoz, who bought a castle there a year before his death, Sauveterre-la-Lémance is an ideal place to discover the mysteries of the North Perigord and its surroundings.
Listed as an historic monument, the castle of the Kings Dukes is a castle built at the end of the thirteenth century by the King of England, Edward I. Located on one of the main roads between Périgord and Agenais, it was one of the centerpieces of the Hundred Years War. Burned during the French Revolution in 1789, it was bought by aviator Jean Mermoz in 1936. Built on a rocky outcrop, it offers a breathtaking view of the valleys of the Lémance and Sendroux.
Located near the town hall, the Museum of Mesolithic Prehistory presents interesting collections found around the town. It is open from Sunday to Friday, in the afternoon, between June and September.
Listed as a Historical Monument, the Church of St. Bartholomew dates from the twelfth century. Romanesque style, it was rebuilt in the nineteenth century, but still retains some original features such as the choir.
An archaeological site classified as a Historical Monument, the Martinet deposit was discovered in the early 1920s. Considered as the cradle of Sauveterrien, it has many traces of late-modern industry.
While strolling in the town, do not miss to admire the cross of way of XVe century, classified with the Historical Monuments and entirely in wrought iron, as well as the belfry, also classified.
The farmers' market is held every Tuesday evening between July and August.
