Rehaupal is a commune in the Vosges department in the Grand-Est region. Located 25 km south-east of Épinal and 15 km west of Gérardmer, with some 200 inhabitants, the village is on the edge of the Vosges mountains, in a valley whose slopes are covered with forests. The rest of the territory (ie two thirds) is made up of pastures, the economic activity being devoted to breeding (cheese making), even though green tourism has developed over the past two decades.
The contemporary history of Rehaupal was marked by the drama of September 9, 1944, when the SS accompanied by militiamen shot ten men of the village in retaliation for an action by the close maquis of Bauménil. As a result, the commune was decorated with the Croix de guerre 1939-1945.
