Castle of Caradeuc

Monument in Plouasne

The Château de Caradeuc is located in the commune of Plouasne, in the Côtes-d'Armor, 23 km south-east of Dinan, but its park as well as part of the lodgings and outbuildings are also located in the communes of Longaulnay, Becherel and Saint-Pern.

It was built at the beginning of the 18th century for the Caradeuc de La Chalotais family, from which came many Breton parliamentarians and in particular Louis-René Caradeuc de la Chalotais, who was imprisoned for opposing politics of Louis XV. It is to his grandson, keen on agronomy, that we owe the first version of the English-style park and the development of a vegetable garden.

Consisting of a classical style dwelling framed by two pavilions, the chateau was remodeled in 1820 (creation of a triangular pediment on the south face of the central pavilion), then, in 1850, the outbuildings were separated. At the end of the 19th century, the roofs were raised and a monumental staircase was built. In addition, the central pavilion and the side pavilions are redesigned to the north to project.

The park was redesigned in 1898 by the landscape architect Edouard-André, famous for the restoration of the Parc des Buttes-Chaumont in Paris, including French gardens, terraces, paths and decorated roundabouts factories (small buildings such as kiosks, false caves, a small open-air theater and statues), and a forest massif.

In 1954, one of the rare statues of Louis XVI, by the sculptor Molchenet, was installed at the bottom of an alley of beech trees. In 2001, a Carrara marble bust of Prosecutor Louis-René Caradeuc de La Chalotais was inaugurated, marking the tercentenary of his birth.

The castle is listed in the Inventory and the park, one of the largest in the region, from which the hills of Dinan are visible, benefits from the "Remarkable Garden" label.

Still private property, the castle is not open to the public but the park, on the other hand, is accessible. What to walk in an exceptional setting between bushes, shrubs and flowerbeds while admiring the interplay of perspectives and the many statues and factories...
