Coastal town 5 minutes from La Rochelle, located in New Aquitaine, in the Charente-Maritime department, Nieul-sur-Mer is also part of the first ring of the urban area of La Rochelle. It takes place opposite the Ile de Ré, on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean.
For a long time a wine village, Nieul-sur-Mer produced La Rochelle wine, which is widely exported to the countries of the North. At the end of the 19th century, following the loss of all the vines, the town then turned to the sea through fishing and oyster farming.
Rich in architectural heritage of great interest, the municipality of the Atlantic attracts many visitors each year because of its charm and its idyllic setting. Its proximity to La Rochelle, one of the sunniest cities in France, also makes it an ideal vacation spot. Very quiet, several guest rooms are available to welcome you.
Listed in the Historical Monuments for its bell tower, a sort of almost blind quadrangular keep, the Saint-Philbert church dates from the 15th century. Neither vaulted nor paneled, it was enlarged in the course of the 19th century.
Not far away, you can also admire the remains of the priory of Sermaize, a building founded in the 12th century by King Henri II Plantagenêt. Transformed into a distillery at the end of the 17th century, it still has several elements listed as Historical Monuments today, such as a 13th century door on the barn, or two fireplaces.
15th century manor house, the former domain of the Portail has a fortified entrance and a closing wall classified as Historical Monuments. You will appreciate the Gothic porch, as well as the various battlements. It hosted a girls' school until the middle of the 20th century.
While walking, you can also discover the Gô, a stream in which hemp was once macerated for the manufacture of ropes and textiles, or an old dovecote. Also visible, the old firefighter vehicle from Nieul-sur-Mer, a real antiquity, is worth a detour.
Green, the municipality of Nieul-sur-Mer has several parks including that of Léonce-Vieljeux in pre-inventory of gardens remarkable for its pond and basin. Do not miss to take a tour of the Port du Plomb, an oyster and marina port.
The Nieul Authentique association offers guided walks through heritage.
The market is held every Sunday morning. The city also offers a Christmas market in December. A garage sale takes place every August 15, and swaps of clothes or plants are offered regularly.
The city celebrates the fires of Saint John in June.
In July, it's time to celebrate tennis.
For July 14, the town is offering a ball and fireworks: "the Port Festival".
Les Bouffées d'Air Pur is a ten-kilometer mixed-race pedestrian race. A children's race is also offered. It takes place in September.
