This fountain is the 2nd masterpiece of this type in France, the first being the Stravinsky fountain in Paris (Beaubourg). It is produced jointly by Niki de Saint Phalle and Jean Tinguely. It was François Mitterrand himself who wanted this fountain, which was inaugurated in March 1988. It is made up of a round, black basin on which mobile sculptures are arranged in a well thought-out manner since the goal was, according to Tinguely, to shape "a democratic unity, that is to say not monumental, not seeking to dominate Man".
