Enclosed by dwellings, the parish church of Château-Chinon, dedicated to Saint-Romain, dates from the 11th or 12th century and was remodeled in the 15th century, then in 1824 and in 1894. We know little about the first two churches, respectively in Romanesque and Gothic style (with wooden roof and spire), except that they were destroyed due to their small size. Old documents have drawn it but without certainty on the reality of its architecture, but all indicate a bell tower on the nave. The church built in 1824 was destroyed in turn because its style displeased. Witness Abbé Baudiau: "we had recourse to an architect who had no knowledge of religious art; he built a petty church, without majesty, as if without style". This church had "three naves separated by wooden columns, covered with plasterwork". The choir was flanked by two small chapels. The new and current Saint Romain parish church was built in 1894 by the architect Andoche Parthiot on a Latin basilica plan, in limestone. The spire (41 meters) was completed in 1900. The church was consecrated in 1902. The church houses a wealth of religious furniture, the oldest elements of which date from the end of the 16th century.
