Located in the old barracks of the city, in the heart of the Citadel, the Museum of Art and History of Belfort offers to discover through various collections the history of the city. While browsing the different rooms, we appreciate several hundred objects of military life, but also the local history of prehistory in the twentieth century.
On the program of this exceptional site, sculptures, paintings, objects, costumes, weapons or memories of the defense of the Citadel in 1870. Created in 1872 and oldest museum of Belfort, the site presents a basement dedicated to archeology, a ground floor dedicated to Auguste Bartholdi, and the first floor on military history.
In the late 1960s, the Museum of Art and History was enriched with a collection of more than 800 military objects bequeathed by Pierre Boigeol and retracing all the seats known by the city. Over time, pieces of non-European civilizations such as samurai armor were added.
