The origins are very old. Thomières and Saint-Pons were originally two separate communes. In the 4th millennium BC. J.-C., men settled around the source of Jaur: it is the birth of Thomières. The construction of an abbey on the other side of the Jaur river in 936 by Count Raymond Pons of Toulouse, marks the birth of Saint-Pons. They are also distinguished: Thomières was called "lesser city", "city of the poor", while Saint-Pons with its abbey and its mansions was called "mage city".
The history of the city is a succession of periods of growth and destruction:
In 1170 part of the city and the monastery were pillaged, they suffered serious destruction, to the point where the church of the he abbey had to be rebuilt to become the cathedral in 1318. There followed two centuries of development and prosperity thanks to textile manufacturing. Unfortunately, during the wars of religion, the Protestants occupied the town for several months and once again destroyed most of the buildings in the village. At the end of the 17th century, peace finally returns.
In the 19th century, Saint-Pont was a small working-class town which remained relatively peaceful, the 20th century was not a prosperous period for the village which, like in many French regions, saw its textile industry decline.
Saint-Pons-de-Thomières located west of the department of Hérault is exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Jaur, but also the Salesse, the streams of Cavenac, Fonclare, Saut and various other small courses of water. Included in the Regional Natural Park of Haut-Languedoc, the town has a remarkable natural heritage.
