The Museum of Regional Prehistory of Saint-Pons-de-Thomières is located in this town, in the Hérault, 35 km east of Mazamet.
The establishment was created in 1985 and since 2008, it has been installed in more suitable premises, benefiting from a modern museography, although the building which houses it dates from the construction of the abbey of the city (tenth century).
Its vocation is to present and highlight the archaeological treasures dating mostly from the Neolithic era (from - 5800 BC to the Bronze Age, ie - 1800) unearthed in particular in the cave of Camprafaud.
A room is dedicated to the furniture, tools and engravings of our ancestors living around and in the Campafraud cave, and to the tools and works of those who lived in the Resplandy cave (pottery, stone or wood tools). These treasures are highlighted via a "sound and light" atmosphere. This is also the case for the statue-menhirs discovered in the region, presented in another room.
The educational vocation of the museum is accompanied by spaces and workshops designed for young audiences (like a game of prehistoric goose).
Documentaries are screened which are devoted in particular to reconstructions of daily life during these periods.
Labeled "Musée de France", the establishment regularly offers temporary exhibitions and has a library.
Open Thursday to Sunday in June and September and Tuesday to Sunday in July and August.
Price: 2 and 3.50 euros. Information on +33 4 67 97 22 61.
