A charming little town in the Herault in Occitan region La Salvetat-sur-Agout takes the heart of the Parc Regional du Haut Languedoc Natural, at the confluence of Vèbre and the Agout. It is located on the edge of the Tarn, near Anglès Lacaune or Olargues.

Of ancient origin, the city of La Salvetat-sur-Agout was born around the year one thousand, with the construction of houses around the chapel Saint-Etienne de Cavall. She then moved to the twelfth century to a rocky outcrop of a meander of the Agout to ensure the safety of its inhabitants. It then gradually develops over the centuries, taking the charming face it has today.

La Salvetat-sur-Agout continues to attract visitors with its unique natural setting as much as by its rich architectural and historical heritage.

Things to see and do

Today the cemetery chapel, the old church of Saint-Etienne de Cavall was built in the late eleventh century before experiencing changes in the fifteenth and the sixteenth and nineteenth. Listed as a Historic Monument, it still houses a miraculous statue of a black Virgin of the eleventh century. It also serves as a relay on the way to Saint Jacques de Compostela.

The medieval past has left many traces in the historical center of the city, and one can discover while walking in the streets the remains of a Romanesque chapel, a twelfth-century bridge included in the supplementary inventory of historical monuments, the beautiful arches tower Cazal or houses with slate roofs.

Be sure to get to the current church Saint-Etienne before admiring Castle Arfifat. Former summer residence of the Bishops of Saint-Pons-de-Thornières, it still stands proudly in the city after being passed from hand to hand over the centuries.

To enjoy sunny days, you can explore the lake Raviège allowing canoeing in the summer and offers many hiking trails on foot or by bike or exploring the standing stones just to away from the joint.
