Vienna was truly the capital of Western music, at least in the 18th and 19th centuries. - The musicians of Rosamonde - Agnès Sulem-Bialobroda, 1st violin - Hugo Meder, 2nd violin - Jean Sulem, viola - Xavier Gagnepain, cello - Founded in 1981, the Rosamonde Quartet brings together instrumentalists of international renown, equally at home in classical and contemporary chamber music. Several composers have entrusted them with the creation of their works. They perform from Japan to the United States, via Europe : Salzburg, London, Oslo, Paris… Winners of the Grand Prix du Disque de l'Académie Charles Cros in 2005, they also give master-classes at various festivals. - The Quartet in D K 575 by Wolfgang Amadeus MOZART (1756-1791) was composed in 1789, commissioned by King William II of Prussia, himself an amateur cellist, hence the prominence given to this instrument in the score. It is divided into four movements : Allegro, Andante con moto, Scherzo- allegro molto- trio, Presto. Along with Haydn and Beethoven, he brought the Viennese classical school to its apogee, before the advent of Romanticism. A child prodigy who excelled at both piano and violin, impertinent and anti-conformist, he left a considerable body of work, despite his death at the age of 35 : operas, concertos, chamber music, sacred music, and an undeniable influence. Over 800 opuses in the catalog. - Works by Anton WEBERN (1883-1945). Langsamer Satz, literally "slow movement", dates from 1905, written by a Webern in love and passion, during a hiking trip with his future wife. Six bagatelles op 9, from 1924 : these short compositions reflect Webern's desire for purity and intensity, "non multa sed multum", a characteristic formula that would later lead to his creations of dodecaphonic music. Composer, student of Arnold Schönberg and conductor, he belongs to the "Second Vienna School". He wrote numerous lieder, concertos, variations, passacaglias, symphonies and quartets, as well as arrangements of works by Bach, Schubert, Listz, Strauss and Schönberg. - The D minor quartet D810 by SCHUBERT (1797-1828), known as "The Maiden and Death", was composed in 1824, four years before Schubert's premature death at the age of 31. The eponymous title comes from a lied written in 1816 to a poem by the German poet Matthias Claudius. The quartet has four movements : Allegro, Andante con moto, Scherzo- allegro molto- trio, Presto. Schubert left a prolific output of over 1,000 opuses : lieder, symphonies, oratorio, operas, chamber music (sonatas, impromptus, trios, quartets, quintets). Having met him only once, but in the presence of his manuscripts, Beethoven said of him : "Truly, in this Schubert dwells a divine spark".
