Located 15 kilometers north of Angoulême, the town of Vars is spread over 2,748 hectares and 32 hamlets.

Due to its number of inhabitants, it is the 37th commune of the department out of a total of 405. It is crossed by the Charente river which gives it all its charm.

Former summer residence of the bishops of Angoulême, Vars was also the seat of an archpriest of the diocese of Angoulême during the 11th century.
