Château de Crévy is located in the new town of Val d'Oust, in the department of Morbihan, 7 km south-west of Ploërmel.
Located on land that will later make up part of the village of La Chapelle-Caro, it was first a Roman oppidum and, from the 12th century, the seat of a seigniory belonging to the families Bonabes then Derval and Rougé (14th century), Malestroit (15th century), Quelenec (16th century), Descartes (17th century), Brilhac (18th century)…
At this date, the castle did not yet have its current form: a dwelling classical style, three levels high (the second floor being located under the attic) leans to the east on a large 14th century tower and a French staircase in granite... On the other hand, it is only in the 19th century that the architect Jacques Mellet designed the main building on the "west" side framed by two round towers, all in a neo-Gothic style then in vogue.
In 1966, restorations were carried out under the aegis of the new owner, Monique Dunan, costume designer for cinema and television. As a result, the castle will house a costume museum for some time. A more peaceful vocation because during the Wars of Religion, it had been at the center of the conflict between the Catholic Malestroit family, which owned it, and the Rohan de Josselin who had espoused the reformed religion. It had also played a certain role in the defense of Brittany because of its strategic position on the road linking Rennes to Vannes.
More recently, the estate listed in the Inventory has housed gites. Currently, the castle and its exteriors are still private but are not open to the public. The site can however punctuate a walk in a bucolic setting. Information on +33 2 97 74 93 53.
