Rohan is a municipality of Morbihan, in Brittany region, 50 km north of Vannes, on the borders of Côtes-d'Armor.
The city developed on the banks of the course of the Oust then the canal from Nantes to Brest whose course is partly confused with that of the river. At the foot of a small rock (Roc'Han), it is on this site that a first fortress is erected in the eleventh century by Alain de Porhoët, who becomes Viscount of Rohan. A priory is then established in the twelfth century. At the beginning of the fifteenth century, Pontivy is preferred as the seat of the Viscount.
Although rebuilt after the wars of succession of Brittany, the castle of Rohan is then abandoned before falling into ruins before the Revolution. But the city remains the cradle of the famous family and in the nineteenth century, it is with the stones of the old seigniorial building given by the Duke of Rohan is built the abbey of Timadeuc.
Today populated by about 1,700 inhabitants after absorption of the villages of Saint-Samson and Saint-Gouvry, rich in architectural and environmental heritage of quality, Rohan is a commercial and lively market town also appreciated by lovers of green tourism. A stage of choice in "center Bretagne" before reaching the coast.
The chapel Notre-Dame de Bonne Encontre is the heritage jewel of the small city. Listed as a Historic Monument since 1922, it is the former chapel of the castle. Built in 1510, it has an imposing appearance due to its materials (granite, shale) and walls with buttresses. Inside, you can see the vault, which is supported by cross-ribs and the frame in the shape of a ship's hull. The coat of arms and coat of arms of the Rohan feature prominently in the Gothic chapel, which has been the focus of restoration campaigns over the last twenty years and has had new stained glass windows since 2009.
The discovery of the heritage of the town continues with its superb grain market which dates from the last quarter of the seventeenth century, a masterpiece of carpentry, and one of the oldest in the region.
To see then, the parish church of St. Gobrien (nineteenth), neo-Gothic style, which we notice the tympanum carved above the portico, the windows that illuminate the choir and a high altar wood.
On Saint-Samson, the church was rebuilt in 1904 on the foundations of a building of the 15th century which remains baptismal fonts in stone which house a wooden statue of Saint Isidore.
In Saint-Gouvry, the church dates from the 16th century, rebuilt in the 17th century and restored in the 20th century. We can admire a 16th century stained glass window in the shape of a fleur-de-lys, which evokes the attachment of Brittany to France. Still religious, we will not forget the chapel of St. Martin, in the cemetery, whose bases date from the twelfth century, rebuilt in the seventeenth and nineteenth. Completely restored, it houses a canopy of the early twentieth century and paintings of the eighteenth.
On the civil level, to see again, the manor of Brangolo (XVII) and that of Quengo (XVI), in Saint-Samson, carved dormers, former stronghold now converted into a guest house.
Calvaries, mills and fountains will finally mark this walk to meet the past of the city.
An interpretive trail was designed linking the main sites of Rohan, including the banks of the canal from Nantes to Brest completed in 1842 and which allowed the development of an active commercial port in the nineteenth century. It is now a marina that has been converted.
