The Grotte de la Crouzade (also known as the Trou de la Crouzade) is located at Gruissan, in the Aude, near Narbonne, on the Mediterranean coast.
This large cavity, about 75 m deep, was discovered in 1866 by a doctor and a pharmacist in the region and has been the subject of numerous excavation campaigns. No fresco has been found, but archaeological remains (tools) and bones have allowed researchers to establish that the site was occupied by man since 300 000 BC.
Dug into the limestone massif of La Clape overlooking the seaside resort, it was classified in 1928.
The cave has two "doors", but only the lower opening is accessible.
The exterior of the site is visible from the valley of the Goutine, which is the object of excursions. The cave is not open to the public.
