The castle of Esvres is located in the town of the same name, in the department of Indre-et-Loire, 19 km south-east of Tours.
It was built from the beginning of the 13th century by the lord of the place, Philippe d'Esvres, on the right bank of the Indre, dominating and watching over the village and the valley.
Fortified, the building then consisted of a dwelling and a high square tower.
The main building was rebuilt in the 18th century, including two corner towers of the old fortress. The square tower then disappeared.
Before 1789, the Sain family from Bois-le-Comte, who had already owned a manor at Esvres since 1672, became the owners of the castle.
The whole is seized during the Revolution. However, we note that during the course of the 19th century, the house was again remodeled. This is why nowadays you can still observe medieval elements (turrets), others from the Renaissance (pilasters framing a door pierced in the curtain wall) and finally the later buildings.
The set has been divided into lots. A private school occupies the "western" part of the castle. The "east" part is another private property, the outbuildings and the dovecote forming other lots. A stone staircase on the hillside separates the castle, of which it runs along the eastern wall, from some of its outbuildings. Despite the sharing, consistency remains.
The exteriors and in particular the beautiful facades of the castle can be admired during a walk in this village of character. Information on +33 2 47 34 35 36.
