The Saint-Bonnet church is located in Bourges, in the Cher department.
Located to the north of the historic center, it was first built outside the ramparts of the time, in the 13th century by the nuns of Saint-Laurent Abbey. This original building was, however, very affected by the fire which ravaged the town of Bourges in 1487.
Its reconstruction was initiated in 1516 according to the plans of the architect Guillaume Pelvoysin. Although it was consecrated in 1539, it did not yet have a bell tower and the construction of the chapels was only completed thanks to the generosity of individuals: most in the 16th century but the last in 1740. Devoid of vaults, the church can be seen with a ceiling at the level of the nave in the 17th century.
At the same time, bad weather destroyed the facade, which was restored in a Hellenizing style.
It was finally necessary to wait until the 19th and 20th centuries for new security and restoration work to give the building its current appearance.
Protected as historical monuments, the Saint-Bonnet church is also rich for its old stained glass windows, some signed by the master Jean Lecuyer, representing in particular the life of Saint Claude, that of Saint John the Evangelist or even the Resurrection of Christ.
In addition, several works or objects classified as objects are preserved (a screed, paintings, a statuette representing Saint Anne and the Virgin, etc.).
This building with a turbulent history but representative of different periods and varied styles can be observed during a free or guided tour of the city.
