Castle La Valette is located in the municipality of Bez and Esparon, Gard, a few kilometers west of Vigan.
At the heart of the reliefs of the Cevennes, the castle was built in the twelfth century by the family who owned the manor, the Esparons, whose primary residence was located on the foundations of another castrum.
From the eighteenth century, several owners succeed. And shortly before the Revolution, acquired by a lawyer of Vigan, Me Aguze the castle passed to the Comte d'Assas-Montdardier, Mayor of Vigan who had just married the daughter of Me Aguze.
Built on a rock on the hillside, in a valley, the castle features architecture today far from the defensive-oriented original fortress. Note two bodies Renaissance era home that connects a nineteenth century building that was raised instead of a terrace.
Redesigned over the centuries, the building has lost its towers and its keep when the Dragons of King Louis XIV besieged the castle (then Protestant stronghold) during the revolt Camisards that followed the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685.
The Valletta's castle is still privately owned but can be admired during a walk through this picturesque village and this region.
