Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Ille-et-Vilaine

Le Rheu is a town of Ille-et-Vilaine in Brittany, on the outskirts of Rennes which it borders to the west.

Covering an area of 19 km², its territory includes three divisions: the center of the town of Rheu, the area Apigné east and the village of Moigné south, an ancient town with which Le Rheu merged in 1965.

Until recently, the town had a rural character and landscapes of farmland. Land in the Middle Ages and under the old regime, were shared among different lordships.

At the dawn of the 1950s the demographic development of Rennes and the establishment of industrial units in the urban area encourage the municipality to create garden cities, with a suburban housing maintaining a certain quality of life. A new phase is initiated in the early 1980s: the Rheu the town center is redesigned, rebuilt and partly pedestrianized. Moreover, housing estates and buildings dedicated to collective housing are arranged, while maintaining a certain quality of life and a green environment. This also results in the creation of space for recreational and cultural facilities.

Therefore Le Rheu, which has about 8700 inhabitants (there were still 3,000 less in 1999) remains a pleasant stop during a stay in Rennes, especially for its preserved natural spaces and sports facilities (golf).
