Bidart

Between Biarritz and Saint-Jean-de-Luz, visit a village that has preserved its typical character while living in the present.

It is necessary to go back to the XIIth century to find the oldest mention of the parish of Bidart (cf Cartular de Bayonne, folio 14, date 1150-1170).

The origin of the name is "Bide Artean", which means: "in the middle of the roads, at the crossroads". In Bidart, there are various roads coming from Biarritz, Bayonne, Arbonne, Ahetze, Saint-Jean-de-Luz, and ancient cliff paths.

The national road from Plateau to Uhabia dates only from 1844 (ministerial execution of 22/09/1843).

It is the old road that descends from the Plateau by the church (now Rue Erretegia) that took the post of horse. Bidart was an important relay for this office which existed in France from the thirteenth century: one finds on the height the house called "Posta". It was on this old road that on May 8th, 1660, the brilliant procession of Louis XIV went to Saint-Jean-de-Luz for his marriage to Maria Theresa of Austria, Infanta of Spain, under the Treaty of Pyrenees (signed in 1659 at the Island of Pheasants on the Bidassoa by Mazarin and Luis de Haro).

On Saturday mornings on the Town Hall Square at 8am is the traditional market.
Tuesdays all day, is the regional product fair in the Place de la Mairie.
On Tuesdays and Fridays at 21h, just attend an authentic part of Basque pelota chistera with world champions and top players in the specialty large pediment (near the RD810). Admission fee.
Guided tours of Bidart every Wednesday and Friday! Meet at 10:30 am at the Tourist Office. Free.
Every Thursday at 21.15 "Royal Racing Cows" at the rugby stadium Uhabia. Admission fee.
Every Friday, the artists are taking over the Town Hall Square on the occasion of "Fridays Art". Musical entertainment at the cocktail hour. Free.
Saturdays at 18:30 and Sundays at 11am: part of the ball bare-handed small pediment of the town hall square. Free.
