Donzenac is a charming medieval town in Corrèze, with old houses covered in grey-blue slates from the slate quarries in Travassac. Donzenac is explored on foot at your own pace, to discover its fortified doors, like the Tilleul door formerly named Maleguise, its ramparts and its timber-framed houses. Among its architectural treasures are the bell tower of the Church of St. Martin, a Gothic feature from the 13th century, whose church contains an old enamelled shrine; the castle of the barons of Donzenac, built at the highest point of the town's oldest district; the Chapel of the White Penitents, built in the 17th century on the remains of an old castle's arms room; and the 13th-century house on Rue du Puy Broch, one of the oldest in the Limousin.
Three kilometres to the east of the town of Donzenac, amid countryside shaped by humankind over the centuries, you can discover the incredible Pans de Travassac site. This exceptional site with impressively steep walls is open from May to the end of October. You can learn all about the slate-quarry worker's trade, with a trip to the bottom of a slate vein and a visit to a small museum.
