The Château du Fou is located in the town of Vouneuil-sur-Vienne, in the department of Vienne, 14 km southwest of Châtellerault.
It was built to the west of the current town around 1480 by Yves du Fou, whom King Louis XI had appointed Seneschal of Poitou. The construction presents the characteristics of a wealthy residence at the end of the Hundred Years War but also has the elements specific to a fortress: high on the edge of a wooded valley, equipped with moats, the castle originally has curtain walls and machicolations.
The elegant ensemble announces the Renaissance style.
History reports that François I and Charles V met there in 1539. Later, in the 17th and 18th centuries, the estate was owned by the Tiercelin family, originally from Appelvoisin.
After various marriages and successions, the château ended up being acquired in the 19th century by the La Borie de Campagne family.
In 1944, the castle was badly damaged by bombardments which gave rise to restoration campaigns. However, one of the wings behind the house will never be rebuilt and the other has been shortened. Elegant, housing a chapel, the castle has a main building whose facade overlooking the courtyard is framed by towers with stairs.
The complex, which remains very well maintained, is listed in the Inventory. The private property hosts private receptions, professional events but also cultural or sporting events.
Otherwise, the estate can be admired from the outside.
