Proud of its past, the village of almost 250 meters above sea level.
It is also a journey through time that Soyons offers you, revealing in its subsoil and its limestone massifs, the imprints left by our ancestors.
Indeed, the village of Soyons has an exceptional archaeological heritage. The archaeological site attests to human occupation since prehistory continuously until the present day. The caves and the archaeological museum are remarkable witnesses. Thus, Neanderthal man, Cro-Magnon, Neolithic populations and the metal age followed by Roman and medieval populations followed one another. The name of the village comes from Soïo, the goddess worshiped by a Gallic people who made Soyons their capital.
On the site, you will discover two prehistoric caves with concretions: the Grotte de Néro and the Trou du Renard. The first, classified as a historic monument, invites you on a journey to the heart of prehistory; while the Fox Hole plunges us into the underground world and provides access to a splendid network of stalactites and stalagmites.
Located in the heart of the village, the museum labeled "Musée de France" presents archeology collections which are, for the most part, the result of excavations carried out in Soyons and in the surrounding area. It traces the life of men from prehistory to the Middle Ages.
