Malansac is a town in the Morbihan region of Brittany, 40 kilometers east of Vannes and 20 kilometers west of Redon.
Bordering Rochefort-en-Terre, Malansac has built its reputation and wealth through the exploitation of shale and slate from the sixteenth to the twentieth century.
Long dominated by the lords of Redon and Rochefort, the locality was also a center of production of pottery craft from the eighteenth century, a tradition that still continues through associations.
The town of just over 2100 inhabitants is also rich in agriculture and agro-food processing units. It was at Malansac that Father Dodu's brand was born.
More recently, the village has also turned to tourism after the development of a theme park devoted to prehistory and the exploitation for recreational purposes of the water of the Moulin du Neuf.
So many arguments, associated with a historical heritage of quality, which justify a detour before going down to the Gulf of Morbihan, distant of twenty kilometers.
Before enjoying its environment and its facilities for leisure, a visit to the town can begin with the discovery of its heritage.
The church Notre-Dame, built at the end of the 17th century, whose bell tower was restored in 1858, is worthy of mention. Inside, a remarkable altarpiece from the 17th century is worth a look.
Also worthy of mention is the Saint-Jacques and Saint-Colomban chapel dating from the 18th century, endowed with a calvary since the middle of the 19th century or the Calvary dedicated to Saint-Jacques which dates from 1807.
In the village itself, the Place des Fours à Pot is reminiscent of pottery craftsmanship.
Then you have to leave the village to see the castle of Grationnais (15th and 17th centuries), and especially the park and the mansion of Bodélio. From the 15th century, the site of more than 360 hectares of woods and water features was completely walled by the lords of Rochefort who loved to hunt there. A convent was also erected of which only ruins remain. The entire Bodélio estate now belongs to a private owner who is trying to restore the site (English park and waterfalls). The park is open exceptionally a few days a year. Information on +33 9 82 12 54 25.
It is then time to visit the amazing Prehistory Park, at a place called the New Cross. It was opened in 1988 on the site of old slate quarries, and all 25 hectares are dotted with wells, cliffs and shale hills. Advised by scientists, the park's designers have recreated life-size scenes ranging from the dinosaur era to prehistory. Spectacular and informative, the park delights young and old alike. Count at least two hours for a visit of the 36 scenes presented. Open all year. Entry: 9 and 14 euros. Information on +33 2 97 43 34 17.
As far as leisure is concerned, the base of the Moulin du Neuf and its 14-hectare lake offer a green setting for a relaxing stroll. In summer, a beach welcomes fans of idleness but swimming is not recommended. However, you can practice canoeing, pedaling or paddle. Bicycles and rosalies are also available for rent. Information on +33 2 97 26 56 00.
The green but singular environment of Malansac can also lend itself to many hiking or mountain biking. A specific circuit dedicated to slate quarries has been designed with views of the Arz Valley, protected for its ecosystem. Note also that one can also take an old way of Saint-Jacques. Documentation and information at +33 2 97 26 56 00. It is also possible to join the outputs of the local hiking club. Contact +33 2 97 66 15 31.
