Fort of Lucey

Monument in Lucey

The fort of Lucey is located in the eponymous town, in Meurthe-et-Moselle, a few kilometers north-west of Toul.

It was built on a plateau at an altitude of nearly 400 m, from 1875 to 1878, on the left bank of the Moselle, to constitute one of the works of the "Toul belt". At that time, it was decided to strengthen the borders with Germany which had annexed Alsace and the Moselle after the war of 1870.

The fort of Lucey could shelter a garrison of more than 600 men and it was armed in particular with 13 cannons and 4 mortars. In 1881, a Mougin-type turret was added, as well as an annex battery.

The whole was restructured from 1904 to 1907 to house a larger garrison. Its armament was also reinforced. During the First War, part of the guns were removed and transferred to Verdun by German troops. Finally, during the Second World War, it was "scrapped" and therefore reinforced, again by the German army.

The fort is now "demilitarized" but its approach is not without danger. The site can however mark out a walk in the surroundings of Toul. Information on +33 3 83 64 90 60.
