The castle of Bonneville-sur-Touques is located in the town of the same name, in Calvados, a few kilometers south-east of Deauville.
Now in ruins, it was a fortified castle built in the 12th century on the foundations of a first fortress built on a motte, about a hundred meters to the south-east of the current one. village church.
Belonging to William the Conqueror, the castle was intended to monitor the port of Touques and the lower valley of this small coastal river which was of major strategic importance: it is in these places that embarkation for England! But also the arrivals: thus, coming or returning from England, the Dukes of Normandy disembarked at Touques then joined the castle of Bonneville…
During the Hundred Years War, the castle passes alternately under the French and English flag. And in fact, when peace returns, the site loses its importance. François I ceded it to the Bourbon-Orléans house, and until the Revolution, if captains were appointed there, the estate was no longer of interest. The silting up of the port of Touques accentuated this situation, and from 1649 to 1742 the construction of a new church was even authorized by removing stones from the castle.
During the Last War, the site was still used as a camp and then as a prison during the Liberation.
Nowadays, only elements of the dungeon and towers and rare parts of the enclosure remain.
