La Mothe castle is located in the new commune of Saint Privat en Périgord, in the Dordogne department, 12 km west of Ribérac.
Located precisely to the northwest of the town of Saint-Privas-des-Prés, on the borders of Angoumois, it dates from the 19th century.
However, from the 13th century, a construction in the shape of a castle mound is mentioned. Remains of this first military residence have since been unearthed.
The complex was acquired in 1689 by Hélie d'Arlot de Frugie who carried out remodeling work (new facades) and built two pavilions surrounding the house. From 1720, the castle was completed by two small buildings which mark the southern corners of the space delimited by the moats. At the beginning of the 19th century, vineyards surrounded the castle. The phylloxera crisis will lead to their disappearance.
Nowadays, the classical style castle has three levels. Agricultural buildings, raised perpendicularly, form a courtyard on the south side (which has become a nicely landscaped garden). The moat, still full of water, separates the accommodation and outbuildings and a bridge connects them.
The ensemble, both noble and bucolic in appearance, has been perfectly rehabilitated and the castle, still private, is listed in the Inventory. It includes lodgings and hosts receptions. Visitors can enjoy a six-hectare park.
