Saint-Pierre-es-Champs

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Oise

Saint-Pierre-es-Champs is a commune of the Oise, in the Hauts-de-France region, 30 km west of Beauvais, on the borders of the Eure and Seine-Maritime.

The territory of the area of 10 km² is bordered on the west by the course of the Epte, a tributary of the Seine considered the geographical and historical boundary between Picardy and Normandy.

Already occupied during the Neolithic and later in Antiquity, archaeological excavations have uncovered weapons dating from the Stone Age and Roman coins on the site of Côte Sainte-Hélène, which dominates the Epte to 190 m of altitude, the village is erected in parish since the ninth century.

Over the centuries, Saint-Pierre-es-Champs benefited from relative prosperity thanks to the exploitation of its peat bogs, in humid areas, from which valuable fuel was extracted. This activity lasted until 1962. At that time, sheep farming was also abandoned on the slopes overlooking the peat bogs.

This entire natural area with an exceptional ecosystem is now protected and, along with Côte Sainte-Hélène, constitutes a heritage and tourist asset of the first order. Designed and developed, the site itself justifies a stage in Saint-Pierre-es-Champs, which has about 700 inhabitants.

Place then to the discovery of the specific natural environment of the municipality.

Now classified as a Regional Nature Reserve on some 80 hectares, the site is divided into several poles: the Côte Sainte-Hélène, all peat bogs punctuated with ponds and pastures. Arranged to reconcile the preservation of fauna and flora and pleasure of the walk, the set is marked out with marked trails and didactic panels. At the top of the coast, an orientation table decorated with ceramics allows to admire and "understand" the Pays de Bray.

Rare butterfly species and equally fragile varieties of orchids are to be observed, especially during free walks or organized regularly by the Natural Conservatory or the Inter-communal Tourist Office. Also worth mentioning on the coast are the archaeological remains and a secular linden tree at the foot of which were discovered burials. Chapels have been erected on the slope following former pagan places of worship.

The wetlands that led to the development and exploitation of the peatlands also favored the formation of many ponds on a quarter of the Reserve. A majority is accessible to the fishermen provided of course to respect scrupulously the regulation. These water features are also conducive to the walk in a bucolic and judiciously landscaped (bridges, pathways). Flower spaces, a tavern and play areas are also available.
