The Francis Poulenc Sacred Art Museum is located in the town of Rocamadour, in the Lot, in the heart of the famous religious city which houses in particular a chapel and a basilica which pilgrims access via a grand staircase.
The establishment has been housed since 1968 in the Bishops' Palace (also known as the abbey palace), in which the bishops once resided when they stayed at Rocamadour.
Of medieval origin, the building was restored in the 19th century.
Renovated in 1996, the museum has a collection of 300 objects of sacred art dedicated to worship from many churches in the Lot, from the Middle Ages to the 20th century or which were offered to the sanctuary.
It bears the name of the composer Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) who was converted to the Catholic faith in Rocamadour and then composed in 1936 "Les Litanies à la Vierge Noire". The museum is currently closed to the public and its reopening is not planned, but its role of conservation of the works remains. Conferences are occasionally devoted to the collections.
