The town of Cayres is located in the department of Haute-Loire, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
Cayres is located on the Devès, 17 km from Puy-en-Velay and 30 km from Langogne.
The village of Cayres was founded in 1820 by the Bussinat family, wealthy agricultural owners from Haute-Loire. The Cistercian monks had set up a hermitage there long before, for isolation and calm. The village then developed around a substantial agricultural activity.
