Pineuilh is a Celtic name which means "art rock". In ancient texts, the name "Pinolio" comes from the Gallic "OSAB" and the Latin "pinus" and means "the clearing of pine trees."

The town is an ancient barony, which included several fiefs. Around 1074, a lord of the Falcon Barde, lived with his family a castle located on the hill known as "Cross Pineuilh". At the same time, this gentleman donated the Gothic church of "Saint-Martin de Braig" to the monks of Conques.

In 1255, the Boville, lords of Pineuilh are part of a very powerful family. They have the passage and the toll on the rivers of the region.

Pineuilh is the most populated municipalities in the canton of Sainte-Foy-la-Grande, with 4330 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011).
