The delightful little Landes spa resort of Eugénie-les-Bains, once patronised by Empress Eugénie de Montijo, charms both those taking the waters and visitors needing rest and tranquillity. A slimming village made famous by the celebrated Michelin starred chef, Michel Guérard, Eugénie-les-Bains invites you to explore its attractions: a country park with a waterfall and rose garden, hot springs specialising in the treatment of metabolic and rheumatic disorders, a spa farm with its relaxation and well-being treatments, the Prés d'Eugénie Gardens, gourmet restaurants and cookery courses at the Michel Guérard Institute...

Additional information
Eugénie-les-Bains

Eugénie-les-Bains is a town located in the Landes region of New Aquitaine, 25 km south-east of Mont-de-Marsan.

It was created in 1861 by borrowing part of the territories of pre-existing municipalities, including the district of Saint-Loubouer whose thermal waters were already famous in antiquity and later appreciated by personalities such as Montaigne and Henry IV.

The wife of Napoleon III, Empress Eugenie, who regularly stayed in Biarritz and frequented the thermal baths of Saint-Loubouer was chosen as godmother of the new locality.

The vocation of the municipality has not changed and it remains a listed spa because of the quality of its waters, certainly, but also its pleasant living environment, its facilities and equipment in terms of leisure and its green environment. Note also that part of the land is dedicated to viticulture (Tursan appellation).

For a cure or at least a soothing parenthesis, Eugénie-les-Bains which counts about 450 inhabitants turns out to be a wise choice.

Things to see and do

The church Sainte-Eugénie was one of the first buildings to be built on the new town. Work began in 1861 and ended in 1869. The style is neo-Gothic, then in vogue. Inside, two turrets provide access to a platform. The belfry is later, erected in 1892 behind the choir, which gives its singularity to the church.

But it is the thermal complex which is legitimately the heritage jewel of the locality. It is located in an 8-hectare park and includes two entities: the Great Baths, a neo-colonial building, and the Thermal Farm, housed in an authentic 18th century Landes farm. These elegant buildings, but with a refined decor, allow spa guests to benefit from the virtues of the waters of the Empress spring (with a temperature of 19 degrees, adapted to the treatment of digestive and urinary disorders and helping to regulate metabolisms) and the source Christine Marie (a temperature of 42 degrees, recommended in the treatment of rheumatism and osteoarthritis). The cures are of variable length. All information on +33 5 58 05 06 06.

Note that it is also possible to benefit from well-being and aesthetic treatments and an à la carte restaurant designed for spa guests, headed by chef Michel Guérard, whose main establishment has also contributed to the reputation of the municipality.

In terms of recreation, the spa park with its series of waterfalls and the municipal park lined with gardens, fountains and a rose garden are remarkable sites for walking.

A playground near the school, with many facilities for children, and a multi-sports area more dedicated to teenagers and adults, next to a picnic area, near the course of Bahus (a tributary of the Adour), are also available.

In this small city entirely focused on well-being, an outdoor fitness area with specific equipment and a green health trail along a kilometer and a half are freely accessible, as well as the bowling alley.

Other possibilities to combine sport and relaxation: a 9-hole mini-golf course partly shaded, near the municipal park (price: 3 euros, contact at +33 5 58 51 13 16) and tennis courts (5 euros for 2 hours, contact at the same number).

Hiking trails of various lengths (3.3 km, 6.6 km and 7.2 km) have been marked on the town and its surroundings. Another circuit is dedicated to developments linked since 1861 to the exploitation of springs. Maps and information on +33 5 58 51 13 16.

It is also possible to join the pedestrian or mountain bike outings of the local club. Information on +33 5 58 51 14 89.

Finally, on the cultural level, conferences, musical readings and exhibitions are regularly offered at the media library. Information on +33 5 58 46 52 37.
