The belvedere of Gizia - Hikes & walks in Gizia

Hike from the church. Quite short, but rich in discoveries! For families, naturalists, heritage fans, the curious...

The remote Gizia is certainly not the best known in the Jura, but it does not lack charm for all that. From the village church, you briefly follow the river before tackling the climb through the undergrowth that leads to Chatel (Clunisian site). After discovering the second church, and strolling through the nuns' garden, you reach the belvedere (tables, barbecue, petanque court, shelter) from which the view embraces the entire remote area (the hamlets along the river, the meadows, the vines...) but also all of Bresse, and in good weather, the hillsides of Burgundy. Remember to look up in the air to see the peregrine falcon, in the cliff to see the chamois, and on the ground to observe the orchids of the dry lawns! After crossing the hamlet of Chanelet, the descent into the forest takes you back to the start (small detour possible to see the resurgence of the river at the foot of the cliff).

Itinerary

The walk is marked in yellow (FFRandonnée standard), and you can rely on the directional signage (posts with arrows at the intersections of paths).

At the church, go down and cross the river by the pretty stone bridge. Take a look at the fountain, town hall square; then follow the road to the post "Gizia".

Take the path on the left and attack the climb in the forest by a "raidillon" (keep your eyes open, the chamois are often in the area).

When you find a road, turn left as far as the "croix de Châtel" post.

Take the path on the left which leads you to the former convent of Châtel.

Before entering the alley of plane trees to cross the site, you can take a look at the other church in the village (on your right).

At the "Châtel" post, take the direction of "Larot" by the road which goes up.

After going through the so-called "3 crosses" site, you arrive at the Chanelet belvedere (or Gizia cross belvedere): superb view of the valley (called "remote" here), on the plain of Bresse, and in good weather the Côte-d'Or. Don't forget to look up: perhaps you will be lucky enough to observe the common ravens or the peregrine falcon!

100 m after the belvedere, take the path on the left, then find the road, which leads you to Chanelet.

After the agricultural buildings, turn left to cross the hamlet (new point of view on the valley and the cliff: look for the chamois!).

At the "Chanelet Village" post, descend to the left: the path which descends into the valley intersects the road several times and brings you back to your starting point.
