Rich and aromatic, Arabica coffee from Guadeloupe is considered to be among the best in the world. Although production has declined since the second half of the 19th century, it remains an exceptional crop, thanks to its fruity and delicate taste. A coffee museum in the municipality of Vieux-Habitants tells the story of its production from 1721 to the present, as well as the various stages of coffee processing. In the hills of Vieux-Habitants in the beautiful Grande Rivière valley, the La Grivelière habitation is also worth a visit. A listed historical monument, this estate offers a chance to learn about farming life in the past and the skills related to coffee and cocoa.
An excellent source of magnesium and healthy flavonoids, cocoa is a classic Guadeloupean crop. Even today, you can still find it on the island of Basse-Terre, Pointe-Noire specifically, admittedly grown in small quantities but still of high quality. Open to the public, the House of Cocoa (Maison du Cacao) helps visitors learn more about cocoa-growing and artisan production.
