Tannay

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Nièvre

Tannay is a village in the Nièvre, in the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region, 20 km southwest of Vezelay.

The territory of the town, where traces of human occupation have been established since the Iron Age, is located on a hill overlooking the Yonne valley, which runs through the east of the town, doubled by its lateral canal said Nivernais.

With a collegiate church in the twelfth century, fortified in the fifteenth century, the village developed through the craft of tannery and flourishing agriculture (cattle breeding Charolais) and viticulture (affected by the phylloxera crisis, the vineyard was partly replanted in the 1980s).

Although having paid a heavy price for rural exodus, having counted up to 1500 inhabitants in the nineteenth century against just over 600 now, Tannay has preserved a historic and environmental heritage of quality, constituting a stage of interest for lovers of green tourism.

Things to see and do

Charming village still with many towers overlooking the roofs, Tannay can be the object of a ride in the form of discovery of its historical heritage.

It will begin with the former Saint-Léger collegiate church, founded in the 12th century and remodeled in the 16th century. A vast building composed of a nave with three vessels of flamboyant Gothic style, its choir is however still old Gothic. Inside, there is an eighteenth-century painting evoking the Last Supper and a polychrome stone statue of Saint Roch from the sixteenth century.

In the village itself, you can admire several houses of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries and especially the House of the Chanoines, Renaissance style, which now houses one of the wine brotherhoods of the city, in charge of organizing the festivities of the Saint Vincent. As for the wine cooperative, it occupies a cellar of the sixteenth century.

In addition, part of the 15th century ramparts are still visible.

Away from the village, at the hamlet of Pignol, the eponymous castle of Renaissance style, former stronghold of Claude de Bèze, secretary of Marguerite de Valois, alderman of Tannay at the beginning of the 17th century, is definitely worth a look. Surrounded by a park, it belongs to the same family since 1618.

We will not forget to return to the small town the majestic town hall built in 1832 in a classical style and enlarged in 1840, when were added a floor and two pavilions. He understood then a room of justice.

Tannay, the village as its surroundings, can be the object of many hikes. For walkers, it is possible to take part of the Saint-Jacques path from Vézelay. A reception center is reserved for pilgrims. Information on +33 6 71 74 60 02 or +33 7 88 11 70 55.

The GR654 that runs through the locality or "bike-road" along the canal and can lead to Auxerre are also popular hikers (walking or mountain biking), and smaller circuits are also marked which may include forays into the Morvan, to the east, and of course stages in the vineyard (with possible tasting sessions).
