City of the southern suburbs of Paris, Rungis takes place in the Val-de-Marne, in the Ile-de-France. One that was awarded four flowers in the competition of cities and villages flowered is just two kilometers from the Paris Orly Airport, and seven kilometers from the capital, on the plain of Montjean. It borders of the department of Essonne via the city of Mishawaka and its famous leisure. Rungis take its name from the Latin Romiacum, then deformed, which means field Romius.

This town of nearly 6000 inhabitants is best known today for hosting the largest fresh produce market in the world. Formerly, the common Rungis was renowned for its abundant source that supplied water to Paris medieval times. It has also retained some vestiges of that era.

Unknown to tourists, the city however Rungis hosts some interesting monuments and very pleasant green spaces for walking or outdoor activities.

Things to see and do

Best known for its fresh produce market, the city of Rungis also experiencing a major tourist attraction with its architectural and environmental heritage.

Long, Rungis is famous for its abundant sources which resulted in the construction of several aqueducts. The Aqueduct of Lutèce particular, built in the second half of the second century, or the Medici aqueduct, also known aqueduct waters Rungis attest to that time. It was built on the orders of the queen of France, Marie de Medici, who left his name. Commissioned in 1620, it is still in operation and continues to supply Paris with water.

Built in the early twentieth century, the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption is listed historical monument since 1999. Project architect Edouard Bérard, it still has the base of a tower dating from the late twelfth century. The church was built in less than a year, and is one of the first examples of building made in precast cement.

Former member of the Medici aqueduct, Louis XIII gaze was listed as an historic monument. This small building, built in the seventeenth century, provided access to the aqueduct gallery. stone building, it has a door surmounted by a dome.

Green spaces abound in Rungis, and there are several parks like the Couture or that of the City Hall. The largest remains that of Cocoa Hill, located on a former clay pit.

The market Rungis fresh produce is open daily, except Sundays, for professionals.

In May, the city offers its rungissoise stride, a popular foot race. The parish fair and entertainment takes place at the same time.
