Plouvien

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Finistère

City of Finistère, in Brittany, Plouvien takes place about twenty kilometers from Brest, south of the beaches of the Iroise Sea. It is located not far from Aber-Benoît and Aber-Wrac'h, near Tréglonou, Lannilis and Gouesnou.

Populated since the Bronze Age, as evidenced by the graves found on site, the territory of Plouvien began to develop in the 6th century with the creation of its parish. Occupied by a commandery of the Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem in the Middle Ages, the Breton town has always known an important agricultural activity which has made its wealth. Today specializing in pig breeding and dairy production, it continues this tradition while maintaining good economic growth.

Things to see and do

Like many Breton municipalities, Plouvien has an important religious heritage, starting with the church of Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul. Neo-Gothic building rebuilt at the end of the 19th century, it reveals inside the Renaissance-style tomb of Olivier Richard, doctor of theology. The sarcophagus is here supported by pilasters, decorated with small figures of sculpted monks.

Nearby, visitors can also admire the Saint-Jaoua chapel built on the remains of an old Romanesque church from the 11th century. Completed in the 16th century, it presents in particular the recumbent statue of Saint Jaoua. The 15th century chapel of Saint-Jean-Balanant is also a must-see during a stay in the area.

Dedicated to truancy, the Skolig Al Louarn museum, or little fox school, traces the history of the region in a fun and lively way.

Plouvien is also appreciated for its natural heritage, with several marked hiking trails accessible on foot, on horseback or by mountain bike and allowing in particular to discover the valleys of the Mills before going to rest in the garden of the Prat. A 7.7 km cycle route or signposted walking circuit, "the Tro Ar Bourg", also allows you to discover in more detail the natural and architectural wonders of this Breton land.
