Commune of Hauts-de-France, Nœux-les-Mines takes place in the department of Pas-de-Calais, about thirty kilometers of Arras. It is located in the arrondissement of Béthune, six kilometers away, and benefits from a railway service thanks to the Arras-Dunkerque line.

It was called Vitris in the 4th century and took its present name, Noewe, in the 10th century, following its destruction by the Normans. A former property of the province of Artois, it was then known for its agricultural activities or for its breweries and sweets. The term "mines" will be attached to it after the discovery of coal in the mid-nineteenth century.

As the pits were all closed in the second half of the 20th century, the town of Nœux-les-Mines is today more oriented towards tourism, offering a rich and interesting heritage.

Things to see and do

Destroyed in the ninth century after the Norman raids and then razed in the middle of the sixteenth century, the present-day Saint-Martin church dates from the end of the 19th century. Still repeatedly affected by fires or by bombing the Second World War, the building has undergone numerous renovations over the years. In brick, it reveals a red facade with the typical architecture of the north of France.

The church of Sainte-Barbe is inseparable from the history of mines and miners in Nœux-les-Mines. Built in the course of the 19th century, it was built to accommodate the workers who came to work by hundreds in the commune. It is also dedicated to the patron saint of the miners, Saint Barbe.

The great feature of Nœux-les-Mines is to accommodate a ski area. Located on a former heap, it has the largest artificial snow track in Europe. The lowest station in France, it is open all year and is served by two ski lifts. Not far from there, a nautical base completes the offer of leisure of the municipality. Open from April to the end of September, it has a nautical ski lift, mini-golf, sports fields, canoe and kayak rentals or a supervised beach.
