Located in the southeast of the department of Allier, the town of Montcombroux-les-Mines touches the departments of the Loire and the Saône-et-Loire.
In the 1830s, the discovery of coal deposits will radically change the formerly centralized structure in the town of Vieux Bourg; it will move to places of extractions to form the present village.
It is for this reason that even today, the town has two churches, two cemeteries and two memorials (Montcombroux Vieux Bourg and Montcombroux Mines). The church in the Old Town, dating from the tenth century is one of the oldest Romanesque churches of France. Its portal is also classified as historical monuments.
