Church Notre-Dame

Monument in Locmariaquer

Listed as an historic monument, the Notre-Dame church of Locmariaquer, in Morbihan, was erected in the course of the eleventh century by the monks of Quimperlé. Heavily damaged in the 16th century by an attack by English troops, it underwent major changes in the 17th and then in the 18th century, in particular with the construction of a new nave.

Beautiful building with a square tower on the crossing, the Church of Our Lady of Locmariaquer also presents to its visitors a Romanesque apse with four buttresses as well as the exterior walls of the choir and the transept in a small archaic structure.

Inside, you can admire a 15th century holy water font adorned with foliage and grapes listed as a Historic Monument, as well as 17th century crosses with altarpiece. These are surmounted by a painting of the Annunciation and a painting of the Visitation. Contemporary stained glass windows made in the 1960s complete the interior decoration. They represent in particular different activities linked to the region such as megaliths, fishing or agriculture.
