The castle of Saint-Jean is located in the municipality of La Neuveville-devant-Lépanges, in the Vosges, 20 km east of Épinal.
The building is precisely located on the village of Saint-Jean-du-Marché, so called for the great fair held there in the Middle Ages and under the Ancien regime, and which merged with La Neuveville-devant-Lépanges in 1973.
Built in the thirteenth century on a spur overlooking the village to the north, at nearly 600 meters above sea level, it belonged to the lords of Parroy and Toullon.
The castle was devastated by Swedish troops during the Thirty Years War which ravaged Lorraine in the middle of the 17th century. Having never been raised, there remain only ruins where one still distinguishes however the bases of the dungeon, the towers, the walls of ramparts and the vestiges of a chapel.
In recent years, the site has been the subject of work of securing, excavation and development ruins via work sites of young volunteers in summer, funded by local communities.
Signage has been set up for visitors who discover the site during a hike.
