The Aquarium du Grand Lyon is located in the town of La Mulatière, in the Rhône, to the south-west of Lyon which it borders.
Located on the edge of the confluence of the Rhône and the Saône, the establishment opened its doors in 2002. Belonging to a private company, it has 47 aquariums and basins where 5,000 specimens representing 300 species evolve. One more figure: in total, the Aquarium presents and stages its "proteges" in a million liters of water!
The visitor travels through different sectors dedicated to local fauna (watercourses and lakes in the region), such as pike, carp or catfish, species from fresh and temperate waters or even those living in tropical seas.
The most spectacular space is the shark pit, which sits next to rays.
It is possible to touch certain fish, such as turbots, or marine animals, such as starfish.
Educational visits are offered for young people, and visitors are also made aware of research programs and projects implemented by the Aquarium on the plan of conservation and preservation of biodiversity. This is how in 2020, blacktip sharks were born in the Aquarium.
